Far North Queensland – Highly sustainable and spectacular lobster
Deep within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, some 350km north of Cairns, lies a series of spectacularly beautiful islands and reefs. Here, in Far North Queensland, our commercial divers catch some of the most colourful and largest lobsters in the world, reaching sizes of up to 5kg.
From bright, vibrant lobster in coastal areas, to vivid coloured lobsters living within the coral, Tropical Rock Lobster caught in this region can be brilliant blue, purple, orange and ghost white. A feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.
MG Kailis Lobster is the largest licence and quota holder in the Queensland lobster fishery. We currently operate up to 4 motherships and 26 dive boats in our fishing fleet and are constantly on the lookout for great divers.
Protecting a Thriving Ecosystem
The Queensland coast is one of the most regulated marine areas in Australia, with the vast majority protected from commercial lobster fishing.
Tropical Rock Lobster can be found all along with Queensland coast, however commercial lobster fishing can only operate within a tiny proportion of the Great Barrier Reef. This sustainable approach allows lobsters and the ecosystem to thrive, and provides long-term jobs and economic benefit to Far North Queensland from this primary industry.
