Tropical Rock Lobster in PNG
The tropical rock lobster industry is an important industry in Papua New Guinea, offering valuable jobs and export revenue. The centre of the industry is in Daru, Western Province, where hundreds of divers support their families with incomes from the tropical rock lobster industry. MG Kailis is proud to have played a part in developing this industry in PNG for the last 25 years.
The PNG tropical rock lobster industry recently achieved MCS certification, indicating the sustainability and strength of fisheries management practices in the region.
MG Kailis has partnered with local suppliers continuously and invested capital in seafood processing facilities, tanks, boats, and fishing equipment across our 25 year involvement in the PNG tropical rock lobster fishery.
Developing an industry that supports locally owned fisheries
MG Kailis Lobster worked in close partnership with Mr Meremi Maina and his 100% PNG owned business, Maru Marine for over 20 years, purchasing significant volumes of lobster tails and from 2013 supporting them to become the first PNG processor of live tropical rock lobster.
This partnership supported 100s of fishermen and their families for many years in Daru and Western Province.
More recently we have worked with United Seafoods after they acquired Maru Marine to develop this industry further, and they have invested significant capital to continue the economic growth and development of the PNG tropical rock lobster industry.
